Solving the Puzzle: Completion Evolution to Optimize Production and Offshore Operations. Hydraulic Fracturing in the Clair Field.
By Anastasia Bird, bp
Completion Evolution to Optimize Well Production and Offshore Operations lecture is an inspiring story of how fracturing strategy and completion evolution became pivoting enabler within the challenging Clair field. Hydraulic fracturing has demonstrated its value in terms of production uplift for the Clair Field since the first well was hydraulically fractured in 2019. It has highlighted that fracturing offshore as a wellwork campaign is an intensive and complex scope. Striving for continuous improvement, the Clair team have developed plans to transfer stimulation operations from an intervention to an integral part of the well construction phase, immediately following lower completion installation. Changing to an ‘online’ fracturing execution approach greatly reduces operational complexity, time and personnel on board required on the platform. The lecture is centered on the evolution of horizontal multistage well completions in the Clair Field, culminating with the implementation of a technology derived from unconventional and consisting in deploying re-closeable frac sleeves and screened sleeves normally operated by Coiled Tubing (CT). By establishing optimized fracturing design underpinning clear production value (the WHY), changing lower completion to enable continuing fracturing (the WHAT) and shifting the fracturing concept from intervention to well construction phase (the HOW) – the case study presents turning point to Clair field stimulation.
Engineering excellence aside, this presentation also carries a wider message on how adopting the change can bring pivotal results. This case study provides a useful example to indicate how continuous thinking and questioning of "established" procedures can lead to improved operations and value.
