Student Bursary Awards

SPE Aberdeen supports students through an annual bursary programme. Over the last 10 years we have distributed £200K to students across Scotland. We invite applications in December each year, and award bursaries of between £500 and £5000 each February. The timing is intended to help students who might be struggling financially to complete their course of study. These bursaries are open to Full-Time Postgraduate students, PhD students and Under-Graduate students studying Energy related courses while attending the universities listed under the SPE Aberdeen Section: University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, Heriot-Watt University and University of Dundee.

The SPE Aberdeen Section are pleased to announce the winners and runners up of the 2025-2026 Student Bursary awards.

This year we had a panel of judges from companies across the energy sector and 71 applications from across all of our 4 student chapter universities. There were 25 bursaries awarded in total. We will be presenting the winning students with their certificates in due course and the top winners will be invited to present at an SPE event in the coming months. In addition to the winners listed below, we also awarded 12 x £500 awards.

Joe Sherrat, Vice Chair for the SPE Aberdeen section says: 'We are delighted to share an exciting milestone in this year’s Student Bursary Competition - we have announced our winners!

After reviewing an impressive range of submissions from talented students across our student chapters, our judging panel narrowed the field down to the top finalists. In February these finalists were invited to give a presentation on how they plan to contribute to the energy industry after graduation. A special thanks to OEUK for lending us a meeting room for the presentations.

We congratulate all students who participated in earlier stages. Your hard work, dedication, and ambition truly stood out.

Our overall winner is Mozhdeh Igder a PhD student at Herriot Watt University. We would also like to recognise three highly commended winners of the runner up prizes Barbara Kopydlowska, Mohammad Saeid Tayebi and Shabnam Mohammadi.
The bursary competition is a highlight of the SPE Aberdeen calendar and one of the many ways we invest in the next generation of industry leaders. The judging panel are taking a well deserved break before starting the process for next year.'

Congratulations to all applicants, and a huge thanks to the volunteers who make the Student Bursary awards possible.
