The past few years have marked a defining period, with carbon capture and storage (CCS) moving from idea to action. Projects are now being built and delivered across the UK, Europe and worldwide, showing that capturing CO2 and storing it safely deep underground is possible at scale. Governments, industry and researchers are working together to invest in new projects, create clearer rules, and share what they learn.

Attention is now shifting from "can we do CCS?" to "how do we do it well and accelerate deployment?"  This year's programme reflects that, spanning five themes across the two days:

By bringing together industry leaders, researcher and policy makers, the conference provides a platform to share progress, discuss lessons from ongoing projects, and explore pathways for accelerating delivery - from storage site selection and well design through to monitoring, regulation and cross-border CO2 transport.

New to CCS, or looking to build on the basics? This free online session is designed for young professionals and anyone wanting a clear introduction to carbon capture and storage. It is the perfect introductory session if you are considering attending the CO2 Storage Conference on 6-7 October.

Ian Phillips will take you through the full CCS value chain, before taking a deeper dive into the details of:

• Capture technologies – what they are, how they work, the challenges involved, and emerging alternative technologies
• CO2 transport – by pipeline and ship, as well as smaller-scale transport by river barge, rail and road
• CO2 storage – in depleted gas reservoirs, aquifers, and the added complexity of depleted oil reservoirs, including proven, probable and possible storage resource classifications using the SPE CCS Storage Resource Management System
• Regulatory requirements – the EU CCS Directive, UK equivalent, and HSE considerations
• Financial requirements – how governments worldwide are subsidising CCS to help establish the market

About the speaker

Ian Phillips has over 35 years' experience in upstream oil and gas and the energy transition. He spent 25 years in mainstream oil and gas roles with operators including Shell, BP, Marathon and Ramco, and with service company Halliburton. In 2007 he became a founding Director of CO2DeepStore, and in 2013 co-founded Pale Blue Dot Energy, which conceived and developed the Scottish Acorn CCS Project. After six years as CEO of the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre, he rejoined Pale Blue Dot Energy (by then part of Storegga) as Acorn Project Director in 2020, working on carbon storage and low carbon hydrogen. Since October 2022 he has worked as an independent consultant in the energy transition space. Ian holds an M.Eng. in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University and an MBA from the Open University, is a Fellow of the UK Energy Institute, and a Chartered Petroleum Engineer. He is currently Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Aberdeen and has been appointed 2028 President of SPE.
